Luke 15:7 I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety and nine just persons, who need no repentance.

In the previous blog we looked at the lost sheep. The religious leaders at the time knew that they were the shepherds of the nation of Israel. Jesus is calling them out: "Go after the lost sheep, don't condemn them!" And the sinners and tax collectors also hear what Jesus is saying. They have been excluded so far by the religous system. But they hear Jesus say: "God is NOT like that! God is looking for you and wants to bring you home!" So clearly Jesus is speaking to both groups of people.

And then Jesus concludes his parable with this weird sentence. He is saying (paraphrased): "Guys, I rejoice over that one sheep more than I do rejoice over those 99 sheep."

This of course leads to some legitimate questions. What about tho...

Luke 15:6-7 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repents, more than over ninety and nine just persons, who need no repentance.

Over the next few days and weeks, I want to share a few of my thoughts on one of my favorite chapters in the whole Bible. I always loved Luke 15: The Parable of the Searching Father (or "Lost Sheep"), the Parable of the Lost Coin and then the Parable of the Waiting Father (or Prodigal Son).

I don't know yet how many blogs this will actually fill. I'll just get started today, and we'll see when I'm finished.

So let's set the context right: Luke 15 is one of those days where Jesus is scandalizing the religious teachers. Verse 1 says that the tax collectors and sinners drew near to Jes...

Ephesians 6:10-11 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

There is so much to say about the devil's tactics, and how to resist him. One day we plan on writing a book on this topic as well (Though we can't give any promises on the timeline as of right now, so we can't tell you anything concrete yet). But let's wrap up this mini series in our blog on a positive note. So far we looked at the devil's schemes. Now let's look at the passage that shows us how to defeat him.

Maybe you have read Eph. 6:10-18 before, the Armor of God. This passage gives us the clearest description on how we can defeat the devil, how we can resist him. At first it can sound difficult and strenous. But I firmly believe in 1. Cor. 10:13

1 Corinthians 10:13 There has no ...

Matthew 4:11 Then the devil left him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Throughout the last few blogs, we have been looking at the devil's temptations. Basically there are three main ways in which the devil tempts us:

  • Using what God has given as a reason to turn away from Him
  • Testing God, trying to control God instead of aligning ourselves with Him
  • The Shortcut: Giving in to the lie that the devil offers a shortcut to fulfillment by breaking God's law

It's fascinating to me to see that the last temptation is exactly what God did with Eve as well. Remember what the serpant said?

Genesis 3:4-5 And the serpent said unto the woman, You shall not surely die: For God does know that in the day you eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

First of all, the devil...

Matthew 4:8-9 Again, the devil took him up into an exceedingly high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And said unto him, All these things will I give you, if you will fall down and worship me.

We already covered the first two temptations in our previous blogs, now let’s look at the third temptation that the devil throws at Jesus: The devil is offering Jesus the kingdoms of the world.

A little bit of background here: The devil is called the god of this age (2 Cor. 4:4). Why is that? Well, he is the god of this world, because of our sin. When Adam and Eve sinned, death has entered this world. The devil started having dominion over humankind. The devil has become the god of this age.

At the same time, God has already promised Jesus the kingdom. For example:

Psalms 110:1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make ...

Matthew 4:5-6 Then the devil took him up into the holy city, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, And said unto him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning you: and in their hands they shall bear you up, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone.

In the previous post, we looked at the first temptation: Using the resources God has given us to turn against God. Now we're looking at the second temptation: Testing God!

Remember: When the devil tempted Jesus the first time, Jesus responded by quoting scripture. In other words Jesus said: "I put my trust in Scripture, I put my trust that everything that is written in Scripture, I trust that the Father will keep every single word that He said in Scripture!"

So now the devil takes that very trust one level further: "Alright Jesus, so you trust in everything that Scripture i...
